Neurofeedback Treatment: how it works

Learning all about Neurofeedback and how it can help with emotional regulation, deeper sleep, and more!

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a medication-free, non-invasive treatment that encourages the brain to create healthier patterns for coping with everyday life. Our brain takes in information from experiences and processes it to make sense of the world around us. Some experiences, like trauma, change our brain’s ability to communicate, which can lead to mental health symptoms. Neurofeedback addresses these changes in a way that talk therapy does not, helping clients achieve better functioning in their day-to-day lives.

What does Neurofeedback do?

People who choose Neurofeedback treatments have experienced more self-efficacy, emotional regulation, self-reflection, motivation to find healthier environments, less detachment, and lowered levels of anxiety.

Clients will overall see positive emotional changes, higher levels of motivation, and achieve deeper sleep. Over time, awareness of emotions may cause higher emotionality, but it is part of the steps for learning how to regulate them.

People have also experienced help with expanding their window of tolerance, building new foundations of executive functioning, attuned communication, self-regulation, enduring coping self-efficacy, and promoting neuroplasticity through brain learning.

Who can benefit from Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is beneficial for people who want to eliminate their anxiety/depression, stress, ADHD, developmental trauma, rigidness, OCD, mood disorders, problematic sleep patterns, or are dealing with digestive issues.  It is also helpful for people suffering from chronic headaches or migraines.

Neurofeedback can help accelerate treatment by reducing the need for personal talk therapy, as the results begin to present themselves more quickly than talk therapy alone.

How do I know if Neurofeedback is right for me?

Neurofeedback is a therapy treatment that monitors clients’ brain waves and improves thought patterns. It’s not talk therapy; it’s work from within by training the brain to utilize more of the prefrontal cortex (the thinking part of the brain). It can help anyone who wants to increase consciousness and emotional awareness, someone who is overwhelmed by emotions or a lack of control over them, and may be more rigid in their responses.

How can I start Neurofeedback treatment at Morning Star Counseling?

You can begin by talking with one of our Neurofeedback clinicians. A full treatment with a Morning Star Counselor would take 18 sessions. We ease into the treatment with the first introductory session around 10 minutes, and then work up to 25-30 minute sessions. Clients are encouraged to try at least 6-8 sessions to notice changes, and we recommend continuing talk therapy in conjunction with this treatment.

Unfortunately, most insurance providers do not provide reimbursement for this treatment. To learn about the cost, please discuss with your Morning Star clinician.
